![]() ![]() ![]() I love a great ski season as well as a lovely foliage trip. I headed home refreshed, relaxed, a car full of holiday gifts and my lungs filled with fresh late autumn mountain air. And the toll road drive up Mount Equinox is great this time of year the mountains, past peak, take on that true purple color Americans have sung about for generations.īut most of all, in this season, I loved just being truly in the middle of a splendid resort in a quieter time, with all the staff and amenities you get at busy times. Nearby Hildene, the Lincoln family home, is a joy to tour and also has hiking and strolling paths. Orvis offers fly fishing lessons and shooting class. There are historic tours of the property. The golf club was still busy this time of year. The Land Rover Experience offers you a chance to learn to drive off-road (and on snow once that comes) like a pro. The specialty is Vermont Wagyu beef, locally sourced from Spring-Rock Farm. A cozy room with a crackling fireplace is the setting, and the service is sublime. Having earned a feast via my hike, I chose dinner at The Chop House that night. With the trees thinner, the views were even more spectacular, another bonus to mellow time. You can join guided hikes as well, and even ask for a ride up to the mountain pond to stroll around there or start your hike from there. Start from the on-site trail kiosk and you can follow trails of varied length and challenge, from a nice stroll to a true challenge. On the grounds, too, is the spa: I would visit there the following day.īut this day was sunny again, so I was off to hike. The Main Hotel features cozy corners for reading and relaxing, a library with a crackling fireplace, dining options like the Marsh Tavern and The Chop House, classic inn rooms and a great outdoor cocktail area with a massive fire pit. I arrived at the Equinox midday, checked into my spacious suite in the Charles Orvis Inn building (renovated in 2018) and then headed off to meander about the property and get my bearings. Today, the resort is made of multiple buildings and stretches over rolling green Vermont land. Over the years, owners added on and upgraded. ![]() The resort’s Marsh Tavern served as a meeting spot for the “Green Mountain Boys” during the Revolutionary War (and it was taken from its British owner during that time). Its history is rich: This is its 250th year in operation of some kind. The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa is located in the heart of Manchester Center, tucked at the base of majestic Mount Equinox. Most of all I marinated in the quiet beauty of this in-between season. I hiked up Mount Equinox and felt like the world was mine alone, and then I poked through shops quiet enough this time of year to allow chit-chat with the owners. I soaked in history and then soaked in the spa hot tub. What I found there over a few days of mellow time splendor was divine. In search of a combination of peaceful retreat, an early jump on Christmas shopping and the chance to just plain get away in luxury, I headed to the Equinox Golf Resort & Spa in Manchester, Vt. The weather is delightful - crisp and often sunny perfect sweater and sometimes jacket weather. Things are a little quieter on the streets and in restaurants and shops. I call it “mellow time” - the weeks between those two prime seasons. Vermont’s foliage and ski seasons are glorious, but here’s to another less spoken-of season going on right now. ![]()
